Second look

April 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

So I just watched the second episode of Southland and was pleasantly surprised. They cooled it with the jerk attitude that Cooper has… and they also gave a bit more depth to the characters. It was nice to learn more about each of them.

Ben Sherman’s reason to become a cop was explained and it also seems like they are moving towards a love thing between him and the lady cop. That should be interesting because he looks so much younger than her… and better looking.

The young black girl who wants to be a cop got shot up in her own house and the cops that are taking her under their wing are doing anything they can to protect her (good for them!!) They go out of their way to place her family in a hotel and even pay for it out of their own pockets.

Why did the baby cross the street? Yeah… not a funny joke. Lydia deals with the baby who wanted to cross the street and we got a sneak peek at her personal life that seems to be pretty juicy! Loves it!

And the retirement party at the end… very interesting stuff. If you haven’t seen it yet, I won’t ruin it but it’s a great episode and I think this show is a keeper.

What’s best for Melanie?

April 17, 2009 · 2 Comments

Well, we all know what Melanie does… she works, she watches TV, she eats, she watches TV, she sleeps, she watches TV, she blogs, she watches TV. End of story.

What do I need? I need more TV shows. Duh. Not really… but I started to watch Southland last week on NBC and I told myself “Don’t worry, Melanie… it’ll be awful and you’ll just laugh at it and it’ll all go away and never make it onto your queue of eleventy billion shows.” Well, I watched it… and I freaking LOVE it already.

I enjoyed watching the relationship between cops and how the older cop was teaching his newbie. It was cute. I also thought that they were going to force Ryan Atwood… Oops, I mean Ben Sherman… down our throats because he’s the new cop and he’s learning the ropes but I was pleasantly surprised when it was pretty much spread out among all the cops. I enjoyed Regina King (Detective Lydia Adams) the most and I can honestly say that she hooked me on the show.

A few of the relationships were a bit weird… like the relationship between the older cop and the newbie. Isn’t he supposed to be teaching him the ropes instead of scaring him to death? Why does he keep telling him to quit? Couldn’t he protect his new partner and be supportive? At the end when he was a huge dick about Sherman killing someone I was really turned off by Cooper. I thought he was an asshole and I wouldn’t be sad if he suddenly got a dishonorable discharge and left the show. Actually, I would probably have preferred if Sherman was paired with the woman cop, Chickie Brown. Eh… I’m sure it’ll work itself out.

There are a few more things that did bother me about the show… why did they have to swear and make us listen to bleeps? I don’t get it. I watch a lot of cop shows and it’s understood that there is foul language but we don’t have to be subject to it during a tv show. I wish they’d cut that out. I also felt like I was getting motion sickness a lot of the time from the shoddy camera work. I know that the camera person was supposed to be in on the action, but again, couldn’t they do like all other shows and make the cameraman an outsider and not a running fool? Please? Thank you.

I’m about to watch the second episode of the season and hope that it’s as good as the first epi was. Anyone else watching this show?
